Tariffs & Incentives
With the ‘big energy debate’ and the need for environmentally friendly alternatives to oil, coal and gas, renewable energy is in favour. The Government is supporting this move and has put its weight behind the so called 'Clean Energy Cashback' initiative for people who generate their own electricity. The time is right for investing in wind. The details of tariffs vary by turbine size and country – but suffice to say, it’s worthwhile.
If you’re based in England, Scotland or Wales, you can find out more detail here.
If you're based in Northern Ireland, you can find out more detail here.
If you're based in Eire, there is a different initiative here.
To qualify for the tariffs, installations need to be accredited as follows.
For 'microgeneration' systems (below 50kW)
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is a national scheme designed to provide assurance to customers for domestic scale generation systems. Both the major equipment needs to be certified under MCS and the systems need to be installed by a company accredited under MCS. It is also linked to the Renewable Energy Assurance Scheme (REAL Assurance), which provides protection against mis-selling and other aspects of the system supply contract. It is important to ensure that whatever you buy is MCS accredited.
For systems above 50kW
The accreditation process for larger systems is called 'ROO-FIT'. In principle this requires Ofgem to accredit any system which would be eligible under what’s called the ‘Renewable Obligation’ (RO). The system design and details need to be submitted online to Ofgem for approval.
